Situated in the highly populous West Midlands region, the city of Coventry, second in size only to Birmingham in the area, is actually England’s ninth largest city. Coventry is situated almost 100 miles north of London, and has the dubious claim to fame as being the city being furthest away from any coastline in all of the UK. Rising above the skyline of this largely industrial city is the beautiful Coventry Cathedral, which was rebuilt in 1962 from the partial ruins of the ancient 14th century cathedral which was destroyed during World War Two. Renowned as a city of reconciliation, Coventry is twinned with the city of Leipzig which also encountered severe damage in the same war. In the post war years, Coventry became the center for the car manufacturing industry in the UK. Although that industry has been largely decimated in recent years, it still provides employment for many of the inhabitants of the city. For lovers of cars and the history of automotive production, the museum in the city displaying British made cars and cycles is well worth a visit.
Like any modern city, Coventry offers plenty for those who like to have a good time. The opportunities to do some shopping are plentiful, form the high street to the back street Coventry has much to offer. At night, Coventry is alive to the sound of revelers all year round. Bars and night clubs are everywhere and the city center is alive with action till late at night, and every night. The city of Coventry has a large ethnic community and this fact is evidenced by the fine Asian restaurants where the finest of Indian cuisine is on offer.
For those who would like to drink in the atmosphere of Warwickshire county and especially Stratford upon Avon and the Shakespeare Theater, then a short care journey will take you there.
Renting a car can be an economical way to travel around Coventry and the region. Car Hire in Coventry usually comes as a ‘fully inclusive’ package which includes unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, passenger indemnity insurance and cover for third party, fire and theft - and usually insurance excess. To rent a car anywhere in the United Kingdom, you must show a full driver's licence and a credit card in the driver’s name. Cars are usually rented to customers between the ages of 21 to 70 years. Hiring a car is a great idea if you want to use Coventry as your base for a three day minimum travel experience around the region. |
