Situated in the north east of England, Darlington is one of the largest cities in Country Durham. Darlington gained her place in UK history as the birthplace of the railway system. To celebrate this achievement, the city is home to the Darlington Railway Museum, set in a restored Victorian station on the first r Stockton and Darlington Railway. The museum, well worth a visit, is devoted to the North East of England’s role in Great Britain’s steam railway heritage.
Despite its traditional background is a modern and vibrant city, with ample accommodation for its visitors and some very fine restaurants catering for all tastes. Darlington at night is alive with action, with many of the students attending the local Durham University letting their hair down after a hard day’s study.
Most of the night life as well as the daytime shopping action take place in and around the modern Dolphin Centre, leisure complex, designed and built in the early nineteen eighties to architecturally meld in with some of the more historical buildings in the adjoining Market Place. Darlington’s Town Hall again opened in the late 20th century also represents an original piece or architecture. Situated on the forecourt of this impressive is an impressive statue “Resurgence” designed to mark Darlington’s economic recovery after the relative collapse of the steam powered railway industry. Darlington, a center of modern religion in the nineteenth century is the site of many churches. One of the most prominent being St Cuthbert’s Church, situated close to the centre of the Market Square.
All of the north of England is filled with sites of ancient castles, and County Durham is no exception. Some of the best known are the eleventh century Richmond Castle and the Raby Castle which was built in the fourteenth century. There are many important historical sites in and around Country Durham, as well as many secluded coves along the coastline. The cities of Sunderland and Newcastle are within easy reach, as is the attractive coastal town of Gateshead.
