Nestling deep within the charming Devon countryside, Exeter is a busy little city providing an interesting blend of history and cosmopolitan living in a dynamic people fueled environment.
Exeter is located in the Southwest of England. It is situated on the River Exe in the county of Devonshire. Full of character and ancient history, Exeter is still able to offer all the amenities and comforts that would be expected of a modern day city. Exeter is the capital city of Devon and provides the county with a central base for education, medicine, religion, commerce and culture. The city is also home to the magnificent Exeter Cathedral, which dates back to Norman times. If you are planning a trip, a holiday, or a short break, Exeter has something to offer people of all ages to enjoy all year round. The surrounding area of Devon with its sweeping countryside, its narrow hedged roads and lavished green fields are only a few miles from the centre. And with its pivotal position within the county, Exeter is also ideally placed to base a trip to branch out visiting places such as the famous Dartmoor National Park and the unspoilt beaches of two coastlines. Exeter has a variety of nightlife and evening entertainment with lots going on throughout the year. There are three cinemas and a few nightclubs in the main central area of Exeter. Also nearby, within walking distance, more nightclubs are situated around the Exeter Quay. There is a large selection of public houses to choose from making the city centre areas particularly busy on Friday and Saturday nights. Most of the public houses serve food, and there are also several nice restaurants ranging from Italian to Chinese. Other evening entertainment nearby include theatres, a ten-pin bowling centre, the Exeter Phoenix arts centre and Westpoint - an entertainment complex, which holds concerts, shows and displays on numerous occasions throughout the year.
One of the major attractions in Exeter is the medieval St Peter’s Cathedral. Skirted by a lovely green and cobbled street, it stands on the site of a 7th C monastery. The underground tunnels that run under the High Street are also popular. Built originally in the 14th C to bring water to the city, they offer a unique experience, being the only such tunnels in Britain that are open to the public. Being an old walled city, and built along the banks of the river Exe, the city centre is very compact. Only a short walk from the cathedral is the 900 year old former Benedictine Priory (Fore Street), a one-time guest house for monks, and later a grand Elizabethan residence. Nearby is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (Queen Street), which has an impressive and varied collection. The shopping options in town are varied, with the Guildhall Shopping Centre and the High Street offering the best in UK retail. Alternatively, just five minutes from the High Street, is the Quayside, a lovely waterside area with shops, outdoor cafes and restaurants, set around 17th and 18th C warehouses. Here, the Crafts Guild is worth a visit, with glasswork, jewellery, metalwork and leather on offer. Exeter is also a great base for exploring Exmoor National Park, famed for its stone tors and rolling moors. Alternatively, up-river on the River Exe you can discover the medieval ruins of the original Exe Bridge, and down-river on the Exe estuary is the port of Topsham with its quaint Dutch Houses, waterfront and museum. Exeter International Airport, only five miles from the city centre, currently has only a handful of scheduled flights to other UK cities. However, Exeter has an excellent train connection to London Paddington, so it is easy to reach from London’s Gatwick or Heathrow airports.
Renting a car can be an economical way to travel around Exeter and the Devonshire region. Car Hire in Exeter usually comes as a ‘fully inclusive’ package which includes unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, passenger indemnity insurance and cover for third party, fire and theft - and usually insurance excess. To rent a car anywhere in the United Kingdom, you must show a full driver's licence and a credit card in the driver’s name. Cars are usually rented to customers between the ages of 21 to 70 years. Hiring a car is a great idea if you want to use Exeter as your base for a three day minimum travel experience around Devon. |
