Located on the eastern bank of the River Severn, the city of Gloucester, sits on the River Severn, slightly more than 100 miles to the north west of London, Gloucester lies in the shade of the Cotswold’s to her east, and the picturesque Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills are also in close vicinity to this port city. In recent years, with the gradual demise of the proliferation of canals that networked the English countryside during the Industrial Revolution and very few ships now call at the harbors in Gloucester these days, with the notable exception of the most inland based Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat in the British Isles.
As a tribute to Gloucester’s rich history as an outlet to the Severn Estuary, through the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, the National Waterways Museum was established in the city, echoing back to the history of these times.
All in all, the city of Gloucester displays to her visitors’ ample evidence of her past yet combined with a modern friendly and often lively atmosphere. Close to the Cathedral going back to Norman times is the actual “House of the Tailor” that the famous authoress Beatrix Potter used in her famous book of the same name, amongst other famous historical landmarks of a similar ilk. In and around the city centre you can come across a catacomb of small and narrow streets with interesting shops selling arts, crafts including a four storey antiques center. Much of Gloucester’s old harbour area have been extensively renovated and now form the backbone for entertainment in the city, housing restaurants, bars and night clubs that provide action for locals and visitors alike. For those visitors that like to travel around the heart of the Cotswolds, then a glorious tapestry of green fields, smattered with friendly little villages abound.
