Ipswich’s town center, like so many traditional UK cities is an interesting tapestry of traditional and modern. The history of the city goes back more than 800 years, and the signs are there for all to see. The centre of action in the town center is the aptly named Taverner Street. Many say that this is the busiest and most interesting street both for shopping as well as entertainment. Visitors to the city should take their time to walk along this busy pedestrian walkway, and look at the rows of shops, bars and restaurants housed in buildings that have been erected and preserved through every phase of Ipswich’s development. Adjacent to Taverner Street, is Westgate Street and the magnificent architecturally Ipswich Town Hall built in the Victorian era. A few minutes walk further is Dial Lane, where many interesting arts and crafts shops as well as boutiques and antique shops line the narrow pavements and cobbled streets. In recent years parts of the dock area of Ipswich have been restored and now houses commercial and entertainment centers as well as housing. A place certainly worth visiting in Ipswich is the Tolly Cobbold brewery, dating back to the nineteenth century and still active today. Ipswich is home to the Willis Building a glass fronted office block, which has the distinction of being the youngest listed building in the UK.
