Situated in south of England, slightly north of London, the town of Luton is an industrial and logistics center. Principally known as the home of the Vauxhall Car plant and site of one of London’s largest airports, Luton was at one time the hat making capital of the United Kingdom
Although still classed as a town the greater Luton Area has a population of around 250,000, a lot of whom commute to and from London to work. A new high-technology office park, Butterfield Green is beginning to open its doors and is expected to provide employment to many residents of the town and its surrounding areas
Luton’s town center has recently undergone some fairly considerable upgrading with more planned over the coming years. Gradually the area is developing as London expands northwards and the feel of UK’s capital city is in the air in the city, one of the focal points of the city, St George’s Square has recently undergone a considerable revamp, with the town’s bus and trains stations being given a major going over. This whole area is a hub of activity, with shopping by day and entertainment by night. The focus for shopping in Luton is undoubtedly the Mall center, which is also being expended considerably, and will gradually have entrances in all of Luton’s main shopping streets, Bute Street and Guildford Street among others.
Another major shopping center is about to be opened beside the Vauxhall Car Factory. The center, called Napier Park, will include housing, retail sites as well as the home to Luton’s first casino. Luton Airport is the fourth largest in the South of England and serves a lot of air transport to and from London, as well as considerable cargo transport. Many of the airlines handling flights to Europe have made Luton their base, with around ten million passengers passing through their gates every year.
