Based in the county of Oxfordshire in the south of England, the city of Oxford has many claims to fame. One of the most well known is that Oxford is the World famous and much renowned University of Oxford, known to the oldest English language university in the World. Oxford was christened the "city of dreaming spires" by Matthew Arnold a famous writer and poet of nineteenth century England, reputedly referring to the aesthetic architecture of the university and its buildings. Oxford is a pretty town, as well as being very clean and organized. Never a center of industry and much better known for its cultural activities, Oxford has the River Thames flowing through her center, making her an excellent stop for barges that punt the river during the summer months. Oxford has always been a very cosmopolitan city with visitors coming from all over the World to study at the University as well a relatively high influx of immigrants from Asian countries. This fact is evidenced by the diverse choice of restaurants in the city catering for a wide range of tastes and subjects. Tourists love Oxford, relishing the opportunity to visit the historical attractions surrounding the University, as well as the historical market square of the town, which offers a variety of hand crafted goods. Housing a collection of art produced in the 20th century only, the aptly titled Museum of Modern Art is worth a visit with two other more locally orientated museums, the Museum of Oxford and the Oxford Story describe the development of the city as well as the university.
Oxford is very flat and is great for taking long and leisurely strolls or even cycle tours. There are bikes for hire in the city for a nominal charge. For this who wants to follow the river terms, renting a punt can be fun or you can even take a car journey all the way along the shores and into London, stopping only at one of the many family run pubs and restaurants for some respite.
Renting a car can be an economical way to travel around Oxford and the region. There are several pick up areas around the city with discounts on offer for rentals of three days and over. Car Hire in Oxford comes as a ‘fully inclusive’ package which includes unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver, passenger indemnity insurance and cover for third party, fire and theft - and usually insurance excess.
