The Ayrshire coast is famous for its golf, and golfers come from all over the World for the honor of playing at Prestwick’s Old Course where the first Open Golf Tournament took place more than one hundred and fifty years ago. Although Prestwick no longer hosts the championship finals, neighboring courses such as Troon and in Turnberry which is near Ayr, are part of the rota. When either of these courses hosts an “Open” the pavements of Prestwick are especially packed with golf fans from all over the globe.
People, when they think of Ayrshire, think or Scotland’s national poet, Rabbie Burns, who was born, lived and died just a few miles from Prestwick, in the small town of Alloway. His birth place there has become no less than a monument for the millions of followers of Burn’s whose poetry, philosophy and life is celebrated every year all over the World on the anniversary of his birthday on the 25th of January. Burn’s birthplace at Alloway now houses a small museum and immaculate gardens. It is hard to believe that Burns passed away more than two hundred years ago, yet his memory lives on to this day.
There are many beautiful spots along the Ayrshire coast to visit, to stop for a picnic or visit the famous Culzean Castle near Girvan further south along the coast. If it’s big city action you are looking for, either for business or pleasure, Glasgow can be reached by car in less than an hour.
Renting a car can be an economical way to travel around Prestwick and the Ayrshire coastal region.
