Chicago is best known as the windy city. It is also the largest city in the state of Illinois and in the entire Midwest. Chicago has a growing population of more than three million people which also makes it the third largest city in the entire United States. Chicago is a booming city that warmly welcomes more than 40 million visitors each year.
The name “Chicago” is French. When it was incorporated as a city back in 1837, it was considered to be the fastest growing city in the world. Overnight, its population went from a mere 30,000 people to over a million. It was a population burst like no other city had ever experienced. Within forty short years after that population spurt, the population grew to over three million. Today, Chicago’s population is still around three million which makes it the fifth largest city in the world.
Before Chicago became a city, it was an area that was primarily inhibited by various Indian tribes such as the Miami, the Potawatomis, the Fox, and the Sauk. These Indians inhibited the area many years before the arrival of the first settler, Jean Baptiste, Pointe du Sable in 1770. There was a lot of tension between the Indian tribes and the settlers. Therefore the US Army built a massive fort and called it Fort Dearborn. Fort Dearborn was the site of the deadly Fort Dearborn Massacre which was part of the War of 1812. The fort was ambushed by the Potawatomis Indians and fifty people were murdered and the rest were taken to be sold as slaves to the British. Fort Dearborn was then burned to the ground. Today, this massacre is remembered by the first red star that is on the flag of Chicago.
Chicago is a hot spot for millions of tourists each year. People are drawn to the many upscale shopping venues along the Magnificent Mile, the great sporting events, cultural events, theater, and concerts, and the many parks and museums throughout and around Chicago. It may be a windy city, but it is also a working city. There are plenty of things to see and do for Chicago locals and tourists alike.

Guests are also attracted to the great sporting events that Chicago has to offer such as the Chicago Bears football team, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox baseball teams, and the famous Chicago Bulls basketball team that once featured the basketball great, Michael Jordan. Chicago is also rich with several spectacular cultural events, parks, museums, theatrical productions, and nightlife. There is always something fun and exciting to do Chicago and that is why it is such a popular tourist destination.
Chicago is a major transportation hub in the United States. There are several ways to get around Chicago such as by bus, subway, train, or boat.
