Sprawling along the banks of the Loire River, the town of Amboise is situated in the Centre region of central France, just 27 kilometers east of Tours. Once the home of the French royal court, today it is a small market town that has become a popular tourist destination.
Be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit here, as the stunning 11th century Château de Chenonceu is located just 18 kilometers away on the Cher River near the tiny village of Chenonceaux, and is definitely worth the trip! Back in Amboise, visitors will thrill to the Clos Lucé – the manor house where Leonardo da Vinci died. Also of note, the streets of the old town centre boast magnificent examples of half-timbered houses, while the 18th century Pagode de Chanteloup is located just outside of the city walls. A thrilling Chinese Pagoda, it rises seven levels above the street and is open to visitors. |
