The city of Abbeville is located on the banks of the Somme River in France, very near the English Channel, and was once the lowest crossing point on the entire river. Like most European cities, its history dates back to medieval times, but during World War II much of the city was bombed to rubble. As a result, much of the town is new, but a few historical attractions survived the war and can still be visited by tourists today!
The most stunning location is perhaps St. Vulfran’s Church, which was erected throughout the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Although the original design was never fully completed, the façade remains as a brilliant example of the very ornate Gothic style of architecture, which originated in 12th century France and flourished well into the 16th century. Also, be sure to check out the Collegiale Saint-Vulfran – a 13th century belfry that might be the oldest in all of France!
In addition to offering impressive historical architecture, Abbeville is also a great starting point for traveling along the Picardie coastline, so be sure to rent a car for your visit so you can check out the many marshlands, forests, bird sanctuaries and dunes in the area. |
