The breathtaking city of Aix En Provence was founded by the Romans in 123 BC and is located in the Aix region of southeastern France, between the Durance River to the North and the Etoile, Olympe and Aurelien mountains to the south. Known widely as the “Town of water, town of art,” Aix was founded upon these two identities, created in part due to the many fountains that grace this city. Aix is also where world-renowned painter Paul Cezanne was born and where he died. Not surprisingly, the city is still a center for art and hosts a popular summer music festival each year.
The climate in Aix is pleasant and mild, with a yearly average of 300 days of sunshine, allowing the city to serve as a trade center for almonds, wine, olives, leather and textiles. This makes Aix an ideal location from which to take a leisurely car trip and soak up the breathtaking surrounding countryside, but the town proper is also the perfect place to venture around on foot! Tourists can get lost in time, wandering past the many elegant sidewalk cafes, bookstores, historical architecture and stunning homes that line the ancient streets, making Aix – and many other cities in France – such popular tourist destinations. |
