Located just 120 kilometers north of Paris and 100 kilometers southwest of Lille, the city of Amiens can be found in the Picardy region of France and is the capital of the Somme department. Settlement here dates back to Paleolithic times and today has become a popular tourist destination and important historical centre.
The world-renowned 13th century Roman Catholic cathedral, Notre-Dame d’Amiens, is perhaps the most well known attraction here, as it is the tallest complete cathedral in the entire country and it has the largest amount of space inside as well. Regardless, it is an excellent and impressive example of a traditional Gothic cathedral and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Also of note, the hortillonnages are gardens on small islands in the marshes along the river, and they are definitely worth a stop, while the magnificent old town is intersected by a variety of intricate waterways. |
