Arcachon, located in the Aquitaine region in the southwest of France, is known largely for the Great Dune of Pyla, which is the tallest sand dune in Europe. Located 60 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux at the south entrance to the Arcachon inlet, the dune is 60 million cubical meters of sand that covers close to 500 meters from west to east and 2.7 kilometers from south to north. The dune is mobile and always moving inland, so its height varies but typically ranges from 100 to 117 meters.
Athletic visitors can climb the slope of the dune, but less adventurous travelers can make the ascent via a convenient staircase instead. The view from the top of the Great Dune of Pyla is spectacular, affording climbers access to ample scenery that includes the coast, the expansive pine forest of Les Landes and the Pyrennees range.
The region also offers beaches for families and experienced surfers, as well as chic dining and shopping, historic oyster farming villages and cycle trails. Bird watchers will delight at the variety of species found here and the wine is second to none! So what are you waiting for? Book your trip-and your rental car-today! |
