Avallon, France, is located in Burgundy southeast of Auxerre and north of the Morvan Natural Parc region. A charming town that is full of open gardens, fine town homes and cobbled streets, the shopping center is pedestrian-friendly and the old town centre is large and features a wide variety of ancient architecture.
At the center of town lies a square that is home to the 12th century church of St. Lazare, and just to the left of the church visitors will find the maison des Sires de Domecy, which is an impressive turreted house that dates from the 15th century.
Avallon is also home to a variety of remains from ancient fortifications. In fact, some estimates state that as much as 50 percent of the town’s original fortifications still exist and are intact. For example, when standing in the center of town you are actually standing on top of a portion of the original fortifications. |
