Located on the banks of the Rhone River in France, Avignon is a wonderfully maintained medieval town that is still encompassed by the original city fortification walls. The Place de l’Horloge (clock tower) beckons visitors into the historical portion of the town, known as the intra-muros quarter, which has been named a UNESCO heritage site and is home to the Palace of the Popes and the Saint-Benezet bridge.
In addition to these well-known historical sites, visitors will delight in the extraordinary variety of magnificent buildings, museums, shopping, cafes, bars and historical churches all throughout town. The Rocher des Doms Gardens and Park is a large English-style garden that is replete with a number of water features and stunning views of the city and the Rhone River. The Rue de la Republique offers the most popular shopping and runs to the edge of town, ending at a railway station that brought prosperity to Avignon when it opened to Marseille and Nice in the 1850s. |
