Beaune is located in the central Burgundy region of France, halfway between Autun and Dijon. In addition to wine, this town has a number of breathtaking attractions to delight visitors, including a 15th century hospital and fresh, open air markets. The walled old town and its surrounding ramparts are also a delight to behold.
The Hotel-Dieu complex can be found in the centre of the old-town and is a wonderfully preserved and renovated hospital from the 15th century. The cobbled courtyard is surrounded by deep, ornately decorated roofs and arcaded buildings. Inside, the carefully furnished kitchen and ward interiors, including the grand ‘salle des maladies,’ will astound visitors, as will the wells and the ancient pharmacy.
Other highlights include the church of Notre-Dame, which is home to several magnificent 15th century tapestries that tell the life story of the Virgin Mary. Also, the museums in Beaune are worth visiting, so be sure to check out the Museum of Wine, which is housed in a 15th century building that was once used as a meeting place for the dukes of Burgundy; the Jules-Marey Museum for early video photography; and the Musee des Beaux-Arts. |
