Almost completely destroyed centuries ago in a war with the Cathars, the town of Beziers is located in the Languedoc region in the southwest of France. Perched on a small bluff over the river Orb ten miles from the Mediterranean, Beziers is overflowing with sites and monuments that are sure to delight visitors!
Today a main centre of Languedoc viticulture, Beziers is also widely renowned for its winemaking industries. The Saint-Nazaire cathedral, situated on a high point in town, is visible from afar and stands as a stunning testament to 14th century Gothic architecture. The Plateau des Poetes is a formal, expansive, English-style park that dates back to 1867 and is complete with countless statues of poets and other famous artists.
Beziers is also home to two arenas, one that dates all the way back to Roman times, and one that was built in 1905 in the style of Spanish bullrings, which hosts concerts and an annual bullfighting contest. Also, the Canal du Midi crosses the river Orb here, and connects the city with Toulouse to the Mediterranean port of Sete. |
