The magnificent city of Bonifacio is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the southern tip of the island of Corsica in the Corsica region of France and is separated from Sardinia by the Strait of Bonifacio. Not only is it the southernmost town in France, but it is perched atop a stunning outcropping of chalk-white, 70 meter-high, limestone cliffs that have been carved into mesmerizing shapes by the ocean.
While visiting Bonifacio, be sure to check out the charming old town, also known as la Haute Ville, or ‘Upper City,’ which overlooks the sea and is the cite of an ancient, 9th century citadel that has been thoroughly renovated and functions as a museum today. Interestingly, human settlement here dates back to prehistoric times, while the white sandy beaches here will appeal to modern sunbathing travelers. Also of note, two 16th century Genoese towers can be found in the area, which were constructed to protect the town against invading pirates. |
