Located near the Atlantic coast in the Aquitaine region of France, Bordeaux is brimming with impressive and significant historic buildings – so many that UNESCO has classified 1810 hectares of the city as a World Heritage Site – more than any other urban area given this designation.
The many large, open boulevards in Bordeaux are contrasted by a variety of slender medieval streets and large squares encircled by restaurants, shopping and cafes. The Palais de Bourse was built in the 18th century and boasts a breathtaking view of the river. Also of note, the Grande-Theatre is another 18th century monument that now houses the Bordeaux National Opera House. Finally, the Grosse Cloche (big clock) was built in the 13th century and seems to jump off the pages of a fairy tale. As the last remainder of the Saint Eloi gateway that was part of the original town hall, the bell is tolled at all major public events |
