Brest is located in a sheltered location close to the western tip of the Breton peninsula in France and today functions as a very important naval base and seaport. During the occupation in World War II, the Germans maintained a large submarine (U-boat) base here.
The city proper is situated in the midst of an impressive landscape that includes a landlocked bay and two hills that cradle the river Penfeld. In some places, the ascent from the upper to the lower town is so steep that it is only possible by using flights of steps.
Brest is perhaps best known for the Pont de Recouvrance, an enormous drawbridge, and its castle, which are the oldest monuments in town. Also, the Musee de la Tour Tanguy is home to an impressive collection of dioramas that show what it was like to be in the city on the eve of World War II.
Also of note is the botanical garden that specializes in endangered species, and the Oceanopolis marine centre, which features a variety of sea life in keeping with the town’s maritime tradition. From sandy beaches and grottos to tall granite cliffs, Brest has something for everyone, so be sure to reserve a rental car so you can explore the city proper and the surrounding areas at will! |
