The city of Chalon-sur-Saône is located in the Burgundy region of eastern France on the Saône River and the Canal du Centre. Inhabited since the 3rd century CE, today it is a thriving centre for art and features a variety of historical attractions, making it a popular tourist destination.
Interestingly, Chalon-sur-Saône is regarded as the birthplace of modern photography and a museum here is dedicated to chronicling its evolution since the 19th century. Also of note, St. Vincent’s Cathedral is located here, boasting elements that can be traced all the way back to the 8th century, as well as a magnificent 19th century neoclassical façade. The main square in the city is home to a variety of excellent cafes, and also hosts a thriving market every Friday and Saturday. If art is your thing, consider timing your visit to coincide with the annual, international street artists festival, held each year in July. |
