Positioned just inland from the Cote d’Azur and St. Raphael, Frejus is located in the Provence region of France. The coast here has been quite developed in recent decades, but the town’s illustrious past is still very evident. Dating back to pre-Roman times, 2000 years ago this was a very important port and trade centre, although the sea has receded a bit since then, so the main port is now at St. Raphael.
Today, there are still a variety of Roman ruins to be seen, including an amazing aqueduct, an amphitheatre that is still in use, and a theatre. The medieval centre of town revolves around the Place Formage, which boasts the Cathedral of Saint Leonce and the Mairie, which fill two sides of the square. Although small and fairly simple in its style, the cathedral is charming and features fine carvings around the doorways, while the 4th century baptistery and the cloisters are also worth a visit. |
