Situated at the base of the Alps, Grenoble is located where the river Drac meets the Isere in the Rhone Alpes region of southeastern France. Often called “Capital of the Alps” due to its proximity to the impressive promontories, the city has a history that dates back more than two thousand years.
The sights in Grenoble are truly amazing, so be sure to allocate plenty of time to take them in! The Bastille dates back to the middle ages and is comprised of an ancient group of fortifications that are located on a mountainside overlooking the city, providing an excellent vantage point for observation. Also of interest, the Palace of the Parliament of Dauphine dates to the 14th century, while the Museum of Grenoble is home to Egyptian, Roman and Greek artifacts, as well as a collection of paintings that spans virtually every artistic evolution of style. Finally, the Archaeological Museum of Saint Laurent houses collections from archaeological excavations that have been done here over the years and is located in a 12th century Benedictine church. |
