The town of Langon is located in the Aquitaine region of France, 48 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne river. It is situated between the Forest of Landes and the wine-growing region of Bordeaux, and its port is the highest on the entire river that experiences the tide.
The Gothic church of St. Gergais in Langon features “The Immaculate Conception,” which is now a well-known 16th century painting by Spanish painter Zurburan, that had been forgotten for centuries and was rediscovered in 1966. The heritage of Langon is diverse, ranging from the stunning architecture of the wine chateaux, to magnificent medieval fortresses. Be sure to reserve a rental car and plan a trip to the nearby Chateau de Toquetaillade, which has been lived in by the same family for more than 700 years. Open year round to the public since 1956, visits with the family in English are available! |
