The country town of Lisieux can be found in the Normandy region of France, south of Deauville and Honfleur. The town is second only to Lourdes in the entire country as an important pilgrimage center, attracting pilgrims from around the world who are devotees of Sainte Therese.
The newest cathedral in Lisieux was built after Saint Therese was granted sainthood in 1925 and boasts a stunning interior. It is easily one of the grandest churches to be constructed in the last century. Also of interest, the cathedral of Saint Pierre de Lisieux was one of the few monuments that escaped the destruction of World War II and dates to the 12th century. Visitors should be sure to attend the weekly market, held every Saturday morning, and should also reserve a rental car to allow easy exploration of the surrounding villages, especially Beuvron en Auge, and for following the famed Normandy cider route. |
