Situated in the Seine-et-Marne department of the Ile-de-France region of north-central France, the town of Melun can be found in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, 41.4 kilometers from the city center. Similar to Paris, it is located on both banks of the Seine River. Also of note, its ancient church of Notre Dame was built in the 11th century and is perched on an island that is formed by two branches of the river. Although the church has undergone several renovations since its construction, including a complete restoration in the 1900s, it still retains much of its historical appeal.
Be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit to Melun, as the magnificent 17th century chateau of Vaux-le Vicomte is located nearby and definitely merits a day trip. A baroque masterpiece that was once a favorite residence of the kings of France, the chateau was originally built for Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of finances for King Louis XIV. |
