The town of Millau is located in the Midi-Pyrenees region of southern France at the convergence of the Dourbie and Tarn rivers and is encircled on all sides by magnificent pale cliffs, making this a popular tourist destination. Millau is perhaps best known, however, for le Viaduc de Millau – a highly impressive, cable-stayed bridge on the A75-A71 auto route from Montpellier to Paris, so be sure to reserve a rental car for this trip!
Spanning the valley of the river Tarn near the town, the viaduct was designed by renowned British architect Norman Foster and structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, and is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world. Also of note, Millau boasts a 12th century Belfry on the Place Emma Calve and a 13th century fortified gateway known as the Passage du Pozous. For the more adventurous in spirit, the town is also a popular centre for paragliding, so consider giving that a try while visiting! |
