The town of Narbonne is located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, more than 800 kilometers from the city of Paris. Today, the town is situated nearly 15 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast, but it was a thriving port since ancient times, until the Aude River changed course in the 1400s. Today, the Canal de la Robine runs through the centre of town and gives access to the river and the larger Canal du Midi.
Settled since around 118 BCE, Narbonne benefits from its location on an important ancient trading route that remains integral today. Its rich and varied history makes this an excellent place to visit and offers a variety of attractions. For example, the 12th century Cathedral Saint-Just (today known as the Narbonne Cathedral) is a stunning national monument that dominates the town’s skyline. Also of note, the Palais des Archeveques and its former dungeon offer excellent views of the town and surrounding countryside. |
