The historical town of Orange is located in the middle of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region of France on the Meyne River to the north of Avignon. Settlement in this area has always been culturally diverse and can be traced all the way back to 35 BCE, when Orange was a thriving Roman city and important trading centre.
Today, Orange is still home to an interesting and eclectic mix of various cultures, making it a favorite tourist destination. Also contributing to the town’s popularity, the well preserved Roman Triumphal Arch and Amphitheatre have been given the coveted UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. In addition, the Municipal Museum in Orange displays a variety of ancient artifacts, some of which date all the way back to the Neolithic Age! While here, also be sure to visit the 4th century Cathedral de Notre Dame de Nazareth, which features stunning architecture and a number of magnificent Italian frescoes, stained glass windows and mosaics. |
