The town of Perpignan is located in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France near the Spanish border and the Mediterranean Sea. The settlement here can be traced all the way back to Roman times, but the medieval town was officially recorded for the first time during the 10th century. A popular stop for tourists taking a car trip through the region, Perpignan is renowned for its olive oil and winemaking industries.
While here, be sure to pay a visit to the magnificent 13th century Gothic cathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as the 13th century Palais des Rois de Majorque, or Palace of the Kings of Majorca, which is still encircled by the bastions of a 17th century citadel. Also of note, the vibrant Arab quarter provides an interesting level of diversity. In addition, be sure to consider reserving a rental car for your visit to Perpignan, and set aside a day to explore several of the impressive Cathar castles in the region. |
