Located in the Brittany region of northwestern France, the town of Quimper is the capital of the Finistere department and is situated 181 kilometers west of Rennes and 62 kilometers northwest of Lorient. Settled since Roman times, today this is a popular and historic tourist destination, thank to its strong Celtic heritage, stunning cathedral and connection to faience pottery.
Several rivers flow through Quimper, which is a great place to explore on foot thanks to the many bridges that span the swiftly flowing waters. The half-timbered houses, restaurants and shops that line the old town streets are sure to delight, while the ruins of the town’s 15th century walls can still be seen today. Be sure to check out the 13th century Gothic-style Cathedral of Saint-Corentin, as well as the 11th century Romanesque-era Church of Locmaria. In addition, the Quimper faience pottery is world-renowned and can be seen in the Locmaria historical faience quarter of town. |
