The medieval town of Sarlat La Caneda is located east of Bordeaux in the Aquitaine region of southwestern France. It is remarkably well preserved and has thus become a popular tourist destination, thanks to its many historical attractions. Some of these are just outside of town, however, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit and plan to explore!
The village of La Roque Gageac, for example, is just a few miles away and is a true gem that is definitely worth a stop. Perched under the cliffs lining the Dordogne River, it is often considered to be one of the most striking villages in the entire country, thanks in part to the primitive dwellings dotting the cliff walls. Also, if you want a unique way to see some of the area’s most beautiful chateaux, consider booking a trip up the river from Sarlat La Caneda in a replica 18th century boat. |
