Situated along the trunk road from Toulouse in the Rhone-Alpes region of east-central France, the city of St. Etienne is located 60 kilometers southwest of Lyon. Dating back to the 16th century, the city was named for Saint Stephen but has thrived thanks to successful arms manufacturing and coal mining industries.
Culture mavens rejoice! St. Etienne boasts three museums: The Musee d’Art Moderne, which has an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art; Musee de la Mine and the Musee des Ponts et Chaussees. Also of note, the 14th century Bastie d’Urfe castle boasts an underground level that is actually a natural cave that is complete with stalactites! The old town here is a wonderfully preserved example of a medieval town centre, with winding cobblestone streets and the Place du Peuple, which boasts numerous restaurants and amazing shopping. In addition, the weekly market is held here on Sunday mornings. |
