The town of St. Maxime En Prove, also known as Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, can be found in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France, just over 40 kilometers east of Aix-en-Provence. Nestled at the base of the Sainte-Baume Mountains in the dry basin of what was once a lake, today it is an excellent place to stop when driving through the region on a road trip, thanks to its spectacular scenery and rich history.
When visiting St. Maxime En Prove, be sure to check out the impressive, Gothic-style 13th century Basilica of Mary Magdalene. It was constructed in her honor after the discovery of a sarcophagus in the crypt of Saint-Maximin that was purported to be the actual tomb of Mary Magdalene. Interestingly, her remains are still thought by many to be present here today, making this a popular pilgrimage site as well. Also of note, a variety of excellent hiking opportunities and scenic driving routes can be found in the nearby mountains, so be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit. |
