A longtime centre of cutlery manufacturing in France, the town of Thiers is perched in the Massif Central Mountains in the Auvergne region, overlooking the Limagne plain in the Puy-de-Dome department, which is named for a dormant volcano that is located here. Be sure to reserve a rental car for your visit, as a variety of interesting attractions exist in the surrounding area!
Of particular note, Thiers is located in the midst of the Chaine des Puys, which is a visually stunning chain of lava domes, cinder cones and maars, the highest of which is Puy-de-Dome. The Limagne plain, on the other hand, is a verdant agricultural area brimming with grains, tobacco, sugar beets and vineyards. Other sites of interest in the area include the basilica of St. Julien, the Romanesque basilica in Issoire, the Chateau de Ravel, the Renaissance city at Riom and the medieval village of Auzon. |
