Perched on the banks of the Thouet River, the town of Thouars is located in the Poitou-Charentes region of northwestern France, just over 70 kilometers southeast of Angers and 170 kilometers southeast of Nantes. The area has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest towns in France and a popular stop for travelers taking a road trip trough the region.
While visiting Thouars, be sure to check out the massive, 17th century Château de la Trémoille, which is perched on a rocky outcropping overlooking the river and boasts a façade that stretches a staggering 120 meters in length. Today, the structure is used as a school, but visitors can still view portions of the main castle, as well as several outbuildings and courtyards. Also of note, the town’s 12th century ramparts boast two impressive defensive towers, known as the Tour Porte au Provost and the Tour de Prince de Galles. |
