Nestled in the heart of France, the city of Tours is located in the Centre region of the country on the banks of the Loire River, halfway between the Atlantic coast and the city of Orléans. Famous for its vineyards, it is the largest city in the region and has been settled since Gallic times, when it was a critical crossing point on the river.
Today, the city of Tours is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its wine and many historical attractions, so be sure to reserve a rental car for easy access to the surrounding countryside. Tours is often referred to as Le Jardin de la France, or ‘The Garden of France,’ due to the many parks located throughout the city, while the blue slate roofs throughout town – known as Ardoise – are a real sight to behold! Also, be sure to visit the Tours Cathedral, as well as medieval Vieux Tours, or ‘old town,’ which features a number of charming half-timbered buildings, pubs and restaurants. |
