A small town in the Franche Comte region of eastern France, Dole is nestled between Dijon and Besancon on the river Doubs. The narrow, winding streets of the old town are sure to bedazzle visitors, with magnificent homes from the Middle Ages clustered around the church.
The canal in Dole is definitely worth a visit. It runs through a part of town that is known as Little Venice, and the remains of an old Roman bridge here help visitors recall the ancient history of the town. On another note, as the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, the town has turned his old home into a very informative museum that is dedicated to his life’s work.
In addition, be sure to rent a car when visiting Dole so you can easily visit Chaux Forest, which is an expansive, mixed-deciduous forest that lies to the east of town and boasts a number of excellent picnic and hiking opportunities.
