Found in the heart of Switzerland, Fribourg is a gorgeous medieval town with some of the most captivating architecture in the whole country. The city was founded in 1157 by Duke Berthold IV of Zaehringen and is widely considered to be one of the biggest Medieval architectural sites in Europe. Home to a bustling community with a strong artistic history, a visit to this charming part of the world offers a veritable treasure trove of delights just waiting to be explored.
Easily accessed by two main motorways, the A1 crossing Switzerland from east to west and the A12 linking Bern and Vevey together. It is also approximately ninety minutes from Switzerland’s three main airports including the Zurich-Kloten, the Geneva-Cointrin and Basel-Mulhouse. The small regional airport of Bern-Belp is also less than an hour away. Nearly a quarter of a million inhabitants in the region mean that it is a diverse and exciting place to tour by car. There is also a wide array of activities on offer, from biking and hiking, to kayaking, mini-golf and bowling. The Railroad museum provides a fascinating insight into the local history of the transport in the area, and is a particular highlight of a visit here.
