The city of Schaffhausen lies in the northern, German-speaking region of Switzerland to the northeast of Berne and is home to a number of beautiful Renaissance-era buildings with ornate frescoes and sculptures decorating their facades, making this a popular tourist destination in modern times. In addition, the Rhine Falls, which are recognized as the largest in all of Europe, are located nearby in Neuhausen am Rheinfall. Most visitors opt to reserve a rental car for transportation while visiting Schaffhausen, as this allows for easy exploration on your own terms. While here, be sure to check out the many sites that are listed as Swiss Heritage Sites of National Significance, including the old town center in Schaffhausen, as well as the old canton fortress, which is known as the Munot. In addition, the ancient city walls are impressive to behold, as are the nearby Schweizersbild Paleolithic and the Herblingen and Grüthalde Neolithic settlements.
